2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2019 Ford Explorer near Troy, MI

Are you interested in an SUV that has the power to get what you need done while still offering comfort and usability? Then let us help narrow things down with a comparison between two of the best SUVs on the market, the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2019 Ford Explorer. Together we'll explore the power under the hood and other features that will either make or break the choice for you. For instance, the Grand Cherokee has been designed to play just as hard as it works and now comes standard with blind-spot monitoring on all trims while if you've looked at the Explorer before not as much has changed from previous years.

2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Power & Handling

Power is no concern for the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee, with four powerful options to meet your needs whatever they may be. Standard is a 3.6-liter V6 with 200 horsepower. An optional upgrade for those looking for a bit more under their hood is a 5.7-liter V8 that runs on 360 horsepower and can tow up 7,200 pounds. Another option that's unique to the Limited trim is a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 that puts out 240 horsepower. And for those who like to spend more time off the road than on it, the Trackhawk's specialized 6.2-liter V8 is available with 707 horsepower. Rear wheel drive is the standard for the Grand Cherokee, but for those who desire four-wheel drive is available as well.

2019 Ford Explorer Power & Handling

The 2019 Ford Explorer has three powerful engine options. The Explorer's standard engine is a 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. There is also the option for a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with 280 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. While both of these are impressive engines that may outperform the Jeep Grand Cherokee's most basic engine, neither comes close to matching the power of its other three available engine choices. Only the Explorer's third engine option, a 3.5-liter V6 only available on one of the upper trims and managing 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque even comes close.

2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Features & Design

The 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with an amazing selection of seven trim levels, each with a growing list of features and all but one coming with the option of either rear- or four-wheel drive. The base Laredo trim is equipped with 17-inch wheels, six-speaker sound system, keyless entry and ignition, smartphone integration, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a seven-inch touchscreen. Stepping up to the Limited trim sees the addition of driver-seat memory settings, 18-inch wheels, power-adjustable front seats, auto-dimming mirrors, leather upholstery, power liftgate, heated seats, 115-volt power outlet, and a heated steering wheel. The Trailhawk has your back if offroading is your thing, gaining its own unique flourishes, an electronic rear differential, four-wheel drive, and off-road tires on 18-inch wheels. The Overland trim is similarly equipped to the Trailhawk, though not as offroad focused. Turning up the luxury is the Summit trim and its Harman Kardon audio system, 20-inch wheels, upgraded upholstery, self-parking system, active noise-canceling technology, and noise-reducing window glass. The SRT trim is broadly equipped with features such as a specialized all-wheel-drive system, selectable performance modes, performance tires on 20-inch wheels, a limited-slip rear differential, an adaptive sport-tuned suspension, sport body kit, and sport-tuned steering and brakes. Lastly is the Trackhawk with its upgraded 8-speed transmission, high-performance tires on 20-inch wheels, an upgraded adaptive suspension, and aggressive bodywork.

2019 Ford Explorer Features & Design

The 2019 Ford Explorer only comes in at five trims, which is nice, but a little more variety such as the Grand Cherokee's is always nice. Three of the five trims; the base, XLT, and Limited; offer the choice between front- and all-wheel drive, but the other two; the Sport and Platinum; only offer the all-wheel drive. All versions of the Explorer come with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Explorer's base trim has some good features such as an adjustable driver's seat, 18-inch wheels, and a 4.2-inch display, though that's not touch-enabled and only a little over half the size of the Grand Cherokee's basic screen. A trim level up is the XLT, which has a few more features such as power-adjustable front passenger seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and satellite radio. The Limited trim adds a bit more with power-folding third-row seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and blind-spot monitoring, a feature that's standard are all trims of the Grand Cherokee. There's also the Sport trim that focuses less on comfort for more fundamental changes like a firmer suspension and towing package. The last of the Explorer's trims is the Platinum, coming with a panoramic sunroof, premium leather upholstery, and an automated parking system.

Conclusions

While both are impressive vehicles with power and features to spare, it looks like the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes ahead in this competition. While the Ford Explorer outdoes it in the most standard of engines, the Grand Cherokee's options push its power well beyond anything the Explorer can muster. Furthermore, while the Explorer does have a nice selection of trims to choose from, several of the features that it features all along its trim ladder are standard on the Grand Cherokee.
