2019 Jeep Cherokee vs 2019 Ford Escape near Troy, MI

Many families and individual drivers have found advantage in moving up from a sedan to a compact SUV for their driving thanks to their convenience, comparable fuel efficiency, better power, and better hauling capabilities.  The Ford Escape has been a popular pick for those who make the move, but recently you might have noticed this popular brand being outnumbered on the road by a surge of Jeep's popularity.  In the past couple of years, Jeep has revamped many of their lineup to suit the modern era's style and performance needs while preserving their signature off-road capabilities and efficient power, including the 2019 Cherokee.  Is this the car that's better suited to you when compared to the Escape?  Here, we compare power, efficiency, and features to give you a well-rounded glimpse of what these two compact SUVs can offer you, and let you be the judge!

2019 Jeep Cherokee Power & Handling

The base engine of the Jeep Cherokee caters to excellent cruising alongside choice fuel efficiency.  Standard option is the 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder Tigershark engine that supplies you with 180 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque geared through the Cherokee's standard automatic nine-speed transmission.  It's great 31 mpg highway cruising efficiency gives you up to 489 miles in one 15.8 gallon tank.  If your needs are a little more demanding, you can choose the optional 2.0-liter Turbo Engine, another four-cylinder engine, to upgrade to 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.  This system preserves that great fuel efficiency with dual variable valve timing technology built in, plus it gives the Cherokee some towing prowess with a 4,000-pound maximum trailer capability.  Seeking the best of the best?  There's choice to the third option: the 271 horsepower 3.2-liter six-cylinder Pentastar.  This is your go to should you need enhanced on- and off-road performance, as it can tow an extra 500 pounds more than the Turbo four-cylinder and comes standard within the off-road specialized Trailhawk trim.  A sophisticated Engine Stop Start system turns the engine off while the vehicle is braked and at a full stop, saving fuel while idling to enhance the 29 mpg highway the six-cylinder outputs.  Every engine comes in your choice of front- or all-wheel drive, as well, giving you plenty of options to find the system that best suits your needs and lifestyle.

2019 Ford Escape Power & Handling

The Ford Escape also offers three engine options, but only one comes within the vehicle's base model.  The Escape S uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine to generate 168 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque, providing only a front-wheel drive configuration.  For that all-wheel power, you'll have to look to the next trims, the SE and SEL, which use a 179 horsepower 1.5-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder.  The torque doesn't upgrade by much either, this powertrain only giving you seven more lb-ft and a similar average of 29 miles per gallon, same as the 2.5-liter.  For better performance, you'll have to look to the last powertrain option that only comes within the top tier Titanium trim.  This model comes with a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder.  While it enhances the feel of the drive with 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque, you'll miss out on the capabilities of the Jeep and that of a six-cylinder if you really need the extra power, as only this last engine is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds.  Ford pairs these engines to an automatic six-speed transmission, far less smooth to gear through when compared to the automatic nine-speed of the Cherokee.  The lack of array also gives less low-gear torque performance, rendering the Ford a bit more difficult to handle while driving through difficult terrains or severe weather conditions.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Features & Design

Jeep just redesigned its Cherokee in 2018, so this compact SUV is chock full of the latest technology and creature comforts, all wrapped up in a luxurious and modern exterior that doesn't subtract from advertising the Cherokee's signature Jeep performance chops.  It's a tidy, flowing design enhanced with a subtly scalloped hood, standard roof rails, and a powerful stance upon 17- to 19-inch wheels.  Inside, you and your passengers will enjoy exquisite spaciousness between its two rows of seating, 128 total cubic-feet enjoyable in the cabin space upon premium cloth or leather upholstery with six-way standard front adjustment and reclining rear bench.  Both rows give you 40 inches of legroom, well proportioned to handle a full occupancy of five adults.  The trunk supplies you with a good 25 cubic-feet of space behind the back row, expandable up to 55 cubic feet with the 60/40 split bench lowered.  Centered upon the dash is a seven- or 8.4-inch touch radio interface that also controls smartphone integration via standard Bluetooth, Android Auto, or Apple CarPlay and MP3 streaming through USB or auxiliary connections.  Handy controls come built into the steering wheel to subtract on distraction while you drive, giving you instant control over the radio, phone operations, and the standard cruise control.  These systems also come with available HD Radio, GPS navigation, and 140 channels of SiriusXM.

2019 Ford Escape Features & Design

The Escape was last remade in 2017, giving it, too, a nice update into modern aesthetics and aerodynamic appeal.  The nose of the vehicle is outfitted with a large hexagonal grille design, fairly bulky looking when compared to the slim vertical seven slots of Jeep's signature grille.  Lights are larger than the Jeep's as well due to remaining halogen rather than upgrading to LED, connoting a character more defined by utility than Jeep's turn into luxury.  Inside, the Escape was nicely upgraded to create a more premium feel when compared to previous model years.  It's a well put together package that provides you with comfort on the cloth or leather-trimmed bucket seats, though its passenger space measures in only at 99 cubic feet.  Much of this cut down on volume is sacrificed in the second row, where legroom only measures in at 37 inches.  Instead, the Ford caters to those who need to haul, with 35 cubic feet available in the trunk, expandable to 68 cubic feet when the 60/40 folding second-row isn't necessary.  The infotainment touchscreen isn't standard in the base S model, a rarity in today's vehicles.  You'll have to move up to the second trim to receive Ford's Sync3 interface, providing you with an eight-inch screen outfitted with smartphone integration and a SiriusXM radio and GPS subscription.

Jeep's recently enhanced systems and style has been a winner of a gaining number of happy customers all across the nation.  The Cherokee is beloved for its well tailored in-city flare and sophistication that translates over to winding backroads and rocky trails seamlessly, giving you one of the most versatile functionality you can find in a vehicle's performance.  Its efficiency, too, is better suited to the modern day's eco-consciousness, giving you high mpgs that'll let you travel for hundreds of miles between fuel-ups.  The 2019 Cherokee's features and power are also more easily customizable to suit your needs, with an array of base-model options in both built-in engine and package groups to truly make this vehicle your own definition of what luxury and power should mean.  And, something Ford doesn't offer, the Cherokee is a part of a triplet series of Jeep's SUV lineup.  Jeep also offers you its bigger and more powerful Grand Cherokee, as well as its smaller and more sporty Compass compact SUVs.  Check out those vehicle reviews in the links below to find the Jeep of your dreams.
