2022 Wagoneer vs Ford Expedition

If you're currently finding yourself searching for a new vehicle, we're sure you've seen just how many options there are on the market today. Especially in an ultra-competitive segment like the three-row SUV, there are countless possibilities all claiming to be the best of the best. As the driver, you're left to sort through the wide array of vehicles and try to determine for yourself which one actually has the features you're looking for, such as a comfortable and well-designed interior, reliable safety features, and a strong engine that can withstand rough conditions and power through slippery roads when needed. To help narrow down all the available options, we'll be comparing the 2022 Wagoneer up against the 2021 Ford Expedition to determine once and for all which one we most recommend. Continue reading down below to learn more about the features and functions of these two SUVs!

2022 Wagoneer Power & Handling

The 2022 Wagoneer truly shines when it comes to its power and capability, both on and off-road. It all starts with the 5.7-liter V8 engine paired with a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission, supplying the Wagoneer with 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque. It doesn't stop there, though. The Wagoneer also features an eTorque mild-hybrid system with a 48-volt battery, making it more fuel-efficient than many of its competitors. When properly equipped, the Wagoneer has a tremendous 10,000-pound maximum towing capacity, as well as a water-fording capacity of up to 24 inches with the help of the Quadra-Lift Air Suspension System. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but 4-wheel drive is also available, with the option of either the Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, or Quadra-Drive II 4X4 system.

2021 Ford Expedition Power & Handling

For an SUV with five different trim levels like the Ford Expedition, you might expect to see multiple different powertrain options. This is not the case for the Expedition, however, which features just one engine for all five models. The engine in question is the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 which is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. On the first four trim levels, this powertrain is rated at 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The last trim level, called the Platinum, gets a bit of a boost up to 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. Even despite the extra power, however, the Expedition can't match up to the muscle and off-roading abilities of the Wagoneer. For example, its towing capacity is rated at 9,300 pounds, and it has no significant water-fording or all-terrain capability. It also lacks 4-wheel drive, offering rear-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive as an available option.

2022 Wagoneer Features & Design

The Wagoneer's design reflects its classic American craftsmanship, while still having all the modern touches of a contemporary premium SUV. For example, it features LED headlights and up to 22-inch wheels, with standard Nappa leather interior and seating for up to eight passengers. The front seats are power-adjustable with power lumbar support, heating and ventilation, and even a built-in massager on the Series III trim. The dashboard is tech-focused, with both models featuring the new Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a 10.1-inch touchscreen. This system provides wireless smartphone connectivity to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and an available Amazon Alexa assistant with voice commands. It also has tons of standard safety features, like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and active lane management.

2021 Ford Expedition Features & Design

The 2021 Ford Expedition, as mentioned above, features five trim levels. New for this year, Ford added a trim level to the start of the lineup. This new base trim, the XL, only seats up to five passengers, whereas the rest of the trim levels seat up to eight. This is an odd addition given the fact that Ford already has other five-seat SUVs to choose from, and it's the only Expedition model that stands out in this way. If you move past the XL, the other trim levels have a spacious interior that seats up to eight people, with features like an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, tri-zone automatic climate control, and leather interior available to the upper trim levels. All models come with the Ford CoPilot 360 safety package, with features like lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic high beams.

Conclusion:

These two SUVs have a lot to offer, with each one providing a unique selection of features and capabilities. When we compare them both side by side, it's clear to see that the 2022 Wagoneer has managed to pull ahead of the Ford Expedition. Its strength and capability are a standout, and its luxurious interior is sure to create an experience that all eight passengers will enjoy.
