2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2020 Toyota 4Runner

The SUV is unmatched in the industry when it comes to versatility and capability. One of the most popular segments available, most brands have a variety of models available. Jeep and Toyota are two of the top SUV makers with strong off-road capability, a healthy towing capacity, and impressive on-road manners. We're breaking down their top SUV models to find out which is the ultimate SUV. On the left, we have the powerful and luxurious 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and on the right is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner. Which model is the best off-road capable vehicle around? Read on and find out!

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Power & Handling

Whether you're in the city or off-roading, the 2020 Grand Cherokee is remarkably civilized. The ride quality is as comfortable as a luxury SUV with the power of a large sedan. The Grand Cherokee offers award-winning off-road capability thanks to its generous ground clearance and multiple 4-wheel-drive systems that allow it to go where no other vehicle dares to go. There are four engine options available and various powertrains. The standard engine is a 3.6-liter V6 that spits out 295 horsepower. Next is a 5.7-liter V8 capable of 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. SRT models come with a 6.4-liter V8 engine that jumps to 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque while the Trackhawk comes with a 707 horsepower 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine that blasts to 60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds. Two-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive are both available for all models, and the Grand Cherokee is rated to tow up to 7,400 pounds! Braking is reliable, coming to a stop from 60 mph in 124 feet.

2020 Toyota 4Runner Power & Handling

The 4Runner comes with only one available engine, a 4.0-liter V6 that pumps out 270 horsepower. It has a lot of muscle for towing and passing but comes with a relatively unsophisticated ride quality with only bearable manners. The body-on-frame set up leans noticeably around corners. The fuel economy also leaves a lot to be desired thanks to the 4Runner's weight and having only five forward gears. The brakes can also be tricky and take some getting used to. Also, the 4Runner is not terribly fast, though the transmission is smooth and can hold its own in traffic. Like most SUVs, the 4Runner comes with a standard rear-wheel-drive and available all-wheel-drive setup. On rugged terrain, the 4Runner certainly holds its own with 9.6 inches of ground clearance and off-road suspension. The multimode AWD system is capable of taking on rocky terrain, which almost makes up for the otherwise mediocre performance. Towing is rated to 5,000 pounds, which is decent but in no way class-leading.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Features & Design

The Grand Cherokee offers seven luxury trims with the base Laredo coming with a high-resolution 7-inch touchscreen system with blind-spot monitoring. Other standard features include dual-zone climate control, parking sensors, a rearview camera, rear cross-traffic alert, and other features. Upgrades such as a power liftgate, power sunroof, heated seats, an upgraded 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto capability, and several off-road packages and features depending on the trim. Cargo space totals 36.3 cubic feet in the rear that opens up to 68.3 cubic feet. In addition, the Grand Cherokee is easy to get in and out of despite its size. For high-performance seekers, the SRT is broadly equipped but also adds a sport-tuned suspension, steering, and brakes, while the off-road-focused Trailhawk comes with off-road tires and a unique exterior style.

2020 Toyota 4Runner Features & Design

The 4Runner has a simple but outdated design, although there is an 8-inch touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is also an available third-row, but it comes at a cost, offering less cargo and legroom for passengers. Standard features for the base SR5 include Etune Audio Plus with navigation, Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth, and other features. Optional features are less sparse with additions such as a moonroof, sliding shades, sliding rear cargo deck, and a Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System that disconnects the stabilizer bars. Dual-zone climate control, leather seats, and a 15-speaker JBL sound system is also available on certain trim levels. Overall, the seats are comfortable and supportive, but the design hasn't changed much in over ten years.

Conclusion:

When it comes to capable SUVs, there is no better model than the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee! The Grand Cherokee offers a best-in-class off-road ability and several robust powertrain options. In addition, the Grand Cherokee's on-road manners are in a class of its own! The Toyota 4Runner is a bit outdated with a design that is a decade old and a powertrain that is lacking. If you're looking for an SUV that can handle rugged terrain and is still refined on city streets, the 2020 Grand Cherokee is the way to go! Want to learn more about the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
